DESIGN STUDIO 5 ~ URBAN INFILL MARKET
PROJECT 1: PRELIMINARY STUDIES
SITE DOCUMENTATION
PRELIMINARY STUDIES OF JALAN TUN H.S LEE
URBAN INFILL MARKET
This project focuses on investigating basic notions of the city, and learning from examples of urban infill market-places around the world. It aims to introduce the basics in urban design and its relation to architecture, and secondly, studying and determining the programmatic function, societal role and spatial layout of a
market-place and architectural responses for urban infills.
Learning Outcomes of this Project
-Case studies and site analysis are generate to understand the physical and cultural context and development of urban environments
- Determination and description on the role of a market-place in a contemporary urban setting
- Analyse appropriate architectural responses and strategies for designing within an urban infill site
- Documentation on diagrams, mappings, photographic images, orthographic drawings and models to record and communicate site analysis findings, and for further use in the coming design stages.

PROJECT 2: URBAN INFILL- FOOD MARKET
The programme market of this project is food market. It emphasizes on the ONE Malaysia food whereby all different kinds of Malaysian food can be find in the market. There are different types of market style in the Food market. The types of market are the kiosk style, hawker and also café with roof garden. Why food market among all market? From the analysis of the site, Tun H.S.Lee itself lacks food stalls and café. The food stalls some are located in the small alley in between the gap of shophouses of the site. During lunch hour, the food stalls are congested and pack with people. Through this proposal, the food shall provide larger food stalls with comfortable spatial experience for both vendors and users. Moreover, the building to replace the burned building site originally has 2 mamak shophouses out of the 5. The target users shall be mainly tourists, workers around the site, students and also other visitors.

CONCEPT AND SITE PERCEPTION- PROTRUSION
The main entrance in the façade is design to be open whereby the visitors can freely goes in the building. There’s an entrance at the back of the building connecting from the back alley, giving users free flow circulation(permeability) whereby the back alley function as a sub-entrance and an exit. . At the ground floor, it is an open space provided that consists of the kiosk and hawker style food market with the middle courtyard space in between of the market. Going up the 1st floor, it is separated in 2 market space whereby it has visual connection with the ground floor. At the 2nd floor, the spaces are protruding upwards that emphasizes on the view towards the Menara K.Lumpur. The main concept of my design for this project is protrusion whereby it integrates with site, Jalan Tun.H.S Lee back alley. The back main road having the protrusion and protruding that connects with to the back alley at certain parts of the site where it creates a strong figure ground that shows protrusion of the site. The design strategies of the building are having protrusion of building parts designed in and out having visual connection between spaces. The main strategies of the design are connectivity and relationship of space user with the activity of the market. For e.g., the 1st floor are design whereby the user on the upper floor can view down towards the ground floor kiosk market and the middle courtyard that have the interesting activity, food making progress, selling and communication going on. Follow up by the 2nd floor, the connection and communication continues as this time the connection between the 2nd floor and the 1st floor.
Learning Outcomes of this Project
-A design outcome for an urban contemporary market-place is site-specific through its formal, cultural, legislative, structural and environmental design responses
-Gaining basic knowledge of urban architectural typologies, infill design strategies and market-place
programming
- Demonstrate fundamental knowledge and awareness of design codes and regulations
-Design within the constraints of feasibility and in response to basic design codes and statutory requirements
- Utilise study models, diagramming, mapping, orthographic plan-section and elevational studies to explore and resolve relevant spatial, structural, functional and environmental issues in the design development phase
